Brand’s Laira – One of Coonawarra’s Finest

Brands_driveway_resized

This month we move away from the Barossa as Sam Brand from Brand’s Laira talks with Grog on Wheels about the family’s winery in South Australia’s famous Coonawarra region.

The Coonawarra is renowned for its legendary ‘terra rossa’ soil, a characteristic red orange clay produced by the weathering of limestone and its Mediterranean style climate, which together create a perfect foundation for viticulture revered by winemakers the world over.

Cellar_door_resized

G. Patritti & Co. Pty Ltd, known locally as Patritti Wines, once formed a small part of the social and economic fabric of Southern Adelaide. Today however, it's a different story!

Ines Patritti, daughter of the winery’s founder Giovanni Patritti, and brothers Geoff and John who oversee Sales and Production have taken this family owned suburban, Adelaide winery into export markets around the world.

In this month’s article we share the history which has been the foundation of this South Australian company's international success as we chat with Ines and modern winemakers, son/nephew James Mungall and ‘the family’s adopted son’ Ben Heide. Keen for us to appreciate the tremendous contribution these talented young winemakers make to Patritti Wines today, Ines’ approval and admiration for their work is summed up by her simple comment “the Boys have done very well”. But what is it that makes Patritti Wines so special?

Selection_of_chocolates

We’ve talked about cocktails, and we’ve talked about coffee, we’ve talked about wining and dining and we’ve met some interesting people, but now let’s get down to what everyone is really interested in – chocolate!

There is no doubt that Adelaide is incredibly lucky with the range of products made right here in South Australia and chocolate is no different.

If you are looking for something a little bit special, something interesting to talk about, then DMC Confectionery (formerly David Medlow Chocolates) is a good place to start.

This month we caught up with the General Manger, Barbara Drespe to take a closer look at DMC Confectionery which is based in Willunga.

Square Waterhole - Food from the Heart!

Mary_fanis_3

We recently visited Mary & Fanis Katsarelias of Square Waterhole, who have created a unique refreshing cellar door encounter in rural Mt Compass. Lucky guests can savour an exquisite experience of homemade, wood oven baked pizzas and sourdough breads, complemented by locally produced olives and cheeses; all whilst casually tasting their delicious range of wines grown and produced under their Square Waterhole & Kaligro vineyard labels.

It is hard to tell of what this gracious couple are most proud or passionate about; their deliciously, buttery 2004 Square Waterhole Chardonnay, uniquely light and refreshing 2003 Square Waterhole Merlot or Fanis’ secretly guarded sourdough starter. We were treated to an afternoon of these delights complimented by Mary’s delicious pizza sauces, home grown fresh herbs and pesto, with locally sourced cheeses and tasty Kalamata olives, lovingly pickled by Mary’s mother, Dina.

From the Mists of Time – Meads & Mulled Wine

Mulled_wine_feature

As the sharp wind nips ‘round our ears, we don our beanies and scarves and scuttle home to warm fires and families gathered near. With the cold creeping into our bones recollections of warm, richly liquored, spiced brews and honey meads, dance in our memories like friends of old.

But what are these ancient delights, so little talked of nowadays? Mulled wines and meads of various descriptions are the topic of this month’s Feature Article.

And what do Mrs Beeton’s Book on Household Management, Viking virility and ceremonial candles have in common, you ask?

Organic & Gluten Free – a healthier choice!

Organic_wine_cheese

Why eat organic food? It’s simple really – it tastes better. Free of pesticides and gene modified organisms, organic foods are healthier, of a very high nutritional standard and help protect our farm workers and environment, contributing to a sustainable future for all.

But if eating foods containing wheat is a problem for you, organic or otherwise, you’re not alone. Approximately 1 in every 100 Australians suffers from some form of intolerance to gluten, a protein found in wheat, displaying symptoms collectively known as Coeliac’s disease. At Grog on Wheels we think you deserve to join in the fun with our great range of products too, so we’ve created Gluten Free options especially for you.

So, to learn a bit about Organic and Gluten Free foods and discover some great tasting wines, beers, chocolates and cookies available today, make sure you read this month’s Feature Article Organic & Gluten Free – a healthier choice!
